I think the idea behind the 'upgrade' effect is that it made everything more realistic. I don't think it's intended to remove the 'in a computer' details (things floating, binary code wizzing around, etc) though. The effect on Old Frame, which you should hold in mind hasn't yet recovered from the Hunt, turns it into a bit of a run down, slummy kind of place. The streets are tangled with cables, paint and plaster are peeling and cracking, etc.
We've seen stone buildings in Reboot before, too, In one of the systems Matrix and Andraia visited in S3.
I'm trying to collect ideas of what people want to see in a redesign of the 2.0 characters. I'm not part of the team, but hey, I can try, right?
Anyway, if you've got any suggestions check out the post over in my blog here. ...I have no idea how linking things works around here, so here's hoping. :P
I explained a little in there about what I felt their intentions were with the original designs, too- maybe that'll help? And you can elaborate on what I have there, as well.
Lazuli, that's exactly what we've been saying this whole time. We support 2.0, but we don't want to put up with the crappy character designs, and excuses which come along with them.
Dot looks like she does because Serenity is trying to take away her credibility. As a powerful, charismatic leader, she's a threat to the order. As Pippi Longstocking, she's Just A Girl... in theory.

I need to add that I don't like Hellboy so making Bob look like him
is a total non starter.

That's the artist's current artistic style of Oldframe. =_=

Okay. I just figured out my real, most pressing question about 2.0.
Why in the Net is everything... brown?

But it's just not Dot... To say she's the same Dot we know is one thing. It's another to get the audience to truly believe and accept it.
I want to SEE ReBoot. Changing the face of it changes it far too much, at least for me. I want to see my favorite characters again.

The 2.0 team isn't trying very hard, period.
