Actually pulling mainframe out of storage into a new upgraded system could work very well, and still continue the plot from Hunt. If the last seen from Hunt was when it got shut down for storage/upgrading, and they are just now being reactivated that would certainly make it anyones game again, and allow the plot to be shifted in a whole new direction centred around figuring out what happened and adopting to the new mainframe, net and web.
Can't beleive I forgot, modern technology gags could include USBs wich sound like they'd get interpretted the same way as CPUs and ABCs and games run on an emulator particularly a handheld emulator running a 2d game "What in the web, what kind of game is this" which leads into other game gags such as a possible Lego Star Wars spoof.
I just cant wait to see how they make fun of all the current internet trends like twitter...the series was always good about that. It had a great sense of humore. I reallly didn't understand some of the more techy jokes back in the day, but now studying 3D animation, i totally do and it makes it all the more hilarious.
The idea of remaking the first two seasons shouldn't be approached lightly, but if they only upped the graphics, and did NOT touch story, music, characters or anything else, it would be cool. That and they could release it on DVD, and release enough so that it's not nearly unobtainable for students of a budget. Doesn't sound all that likely, though.
And everything you've got written out for a possible story sounds really interesting; reading an expansion on it would be cool
I think that finding a middle ground is the best way to go. Just like the new Star Treck movie. It opened up a completely new clean world to build up, and gather newcomers while not tiring them, and maintaining the oldschool fans satisfied as well.
Rainmaker would never REDO pre-existing seasons of ReBoot...that would be too much work for not enough exposure or profit. Honestly, I am thinking (and kind of hoping as well) that the movie will be focused on like a next generation of Reboot, or else a much later look at the lives of our main characters, and possibly even in a different system. Who knows? Maybe each of them lives in a different system now and has different lives and they become reunited, or perhaps their memories have been lost, but they still have flashbacks of the past. I feel that this is more of along the lines of what Rainmaker is doing right now. Honestly, I don't think they can create an appropriate ending to something that was not their creation, at least at this point. I think creating something new, still very much related, but new is their best bet, and if they get it right, and this becomes very popular, then someday we may get the answer to our cliffhanger.
I really like your idea of associating Hex with the kind of trollish behavior of certain users. XD However, I think great care would need be taken with the amount of direct interaction between users, and characters in the virtual world. Remember, they exist in vastly different time frames. But still, I like some of your ideas. They're an interesting blend of old-Reboot humor with modern computer concepts.
I was actually thinking the other day about a joke about how fast chan threads are posted on, and one of the characters could say "nah they're users, it'l take almost another minute before they post." then a post pops up in the next nanosecond (few seconds in the movie)
I'm going to be perfectly honest here... I strongly dislike season 4. Granted, there were some great moments that we all know and love yet... it doesn't feel right to me.
The thing about season 4 is that the characters get whiny, pouty and annoying. In fact, the only ones I could stand in 4 were Hex and sometimes bob.
So all in all, I often like to pretend that season 4, or at least my two bobs, never happened. I know it did but... I hated my two bobs. Daemon rising was ok, but my two bobs makes me flinch. I can't watch it.
In conclusion, I'd have to say I wouldn't mind if the moviemakers didn't pick up with the cliffhanger. I say, leave the show as it is, let it stand alone, and make a great movie that both diehard reboot fans and new arrivals alike can enjoy. The most important rule is that nobody wants to see a bad movie. Make something fresh, but with the real soul of reboot, the same characters, setting, and quirks but keep the maturity of season 3 please. That's my 2 cents.
Although I have to say I would amend these statements if and *only if* there were a new movie/episode that concluded season 4 that weren't as painful to watch as the first two installments. In other words, if it made up for the lackluster first two movie segments, I'd be all for it.

I like the redo of seasons 1&2 it kinda reminds me of what they did with Gurren Lagann
