Difficult to tell. I think it's just a spice of life thing.
Turbo is like a greenish silver, while Dixon (Glitch's previous owner) is kind of orange-peach.
The nulls come in at least 6 colors - blue, green, orange, purple, black and yellow.
Blue is a hard one because both Bob and Megabyte are blue. Orange could be game sprites or reddish-orange for viruses. Yellow could be web surfers or golden like Phong. Purple could be hackers. And black, I have no idea.
it's a good way to seperate people. when every sprite is a different color and you see 2 green one you think they have somthing in common and possibly related. They needed the vibrant colors to really set each character apart.
Well AndrAIa has orange-tannish skin and aqua hair because she comes from a marine game. Her fins and scales on her back gave her an exotic look.
For Dot and Enzo, I don't know if the writters knew this but green symbolizes life, youth and vitality which is what Enzo has in spades. It also symbolizes jeaousy which fits Matrix. Purple was a good contrast to the green. It is a very regal color.
Bob is silver, blue, brown because it goes well and because well he is Bob.
Mouse standed out with her static glow in the dark orange hair and purple skin. The fact she was able to escape without notice is pretty remarkable if you think about it.
Color is pretty important in the world of ReBoot because it makes characters stand out. And if you think about it, it also mirrors their personality.

you could say that black sprites are like, infected ones, in regards to when megabyte and hex were taken over by the web creature.

Children like many vivid colors? I have no idea in regards to that history. There may be an entire backend though:
Dot Matrix, gameboy screen, green?
Bob.... well come on, he has to be blue! It just goes together!
Magenta Mouse?
Who knows? Great topic!

Maybe it has something to do with a "zodiac" kind of theme upon creation.

That's definitely an interesting theory.. I always thought of it as being just cosmetic, but if there were some theory behind it.. Kinda cool.
