You can earn points by commenting on topics and rating posts. They contribute to your 'level', which you can view on your profile if you click on your avatar, or on your username at the top.
First time I was here I got caught up on the number of posts too, but then I clicked. Where it says "Today:", all the stuff under it is the activity on the site. The posts are topics people have made, the comments are how many comments have been made today, and the ratings are how many ratings have been made in the day.
