ReBoot

Well, there's been a lot of talk about ReBoot, lately, between the web-comic that is being made and the movies that are underway by Rainmaker. I just thought I would blog about this, as I'm not seeing any concern raised over what are hasty decisions on Rainmaker's part.

Don't get me wrong, I love ReBoot, and would love nothing more than for it's return in one animated form or another, but, from what I know of the situation, this is all wrong. I was so excited when I heard of the initiative to bring ReBoot back, first by letting a fan-picked team create a comic, perhaps to raise excitement about ReBoot and draw in new fans, and then by what is apparently a movie trilogy. Now here's where it all goes horribly, horribly awry...

There is no Gavin Blair, Ian Pearson, or Phil Mitchell! (or John Grace, though I'm not sure if he was even involved in season 4) That’s right, as far as I know, there has been no contact between Rainmaker and t...

There is one word in here that makes this analysis at least PG 13; even though there is only one word I just don't want to take an chances. 

One relationship that would be  interesting to portray in future series of Reboot is how Matrix's relationship with his brother Enzo will progress when he becomes a young adult. And what would be interesting is if their relationship is portrayed like Sam and Dean Winchester from the WB's Supernatural series.

First off I don't think that showing Enzo asa young adult means that there will be a second Matrix. If anything it can show how different he is, no matter how similar he looks like Matrix. For one thing Enzo is a Guardian and Matrix is a Guardian Enforcer; both work to protect the net but in different ways.  The difference in his personality will also set him apart. Ok, so  I haven't been active. At all. I grant you. However I was browsing my old entires and was inspired to do that examination of Reboot: ReGenerated that I said I would do so long ago. I'd like to do it (The old page where you could view all the pitches is still out there, if you know where to look, so it'd be good info), but I was wondering if you, the Z2H public, would beinterested.

 Of course, half of you wont even look at this blog, but I know that there are those of you who tend to browse the Latest Update list and such, and do click on random blogs, so here I am to ask. What do you think? Should I do an examination of Reboot: ReGenerated, and how with some tweaking, it could have been a very good pitch if ReBoot was looking to restart entirely?

As such, I'm going to write up a little 3 or 4 page mini story, a back-up if you will, developing a secondary character a little bit.

The nature of the story, however, makes it largely silent, with almost no dialogue ["Shocking!" say my detractors!], and will rest squarely on solid illustration.

So, I found this site while re-living my childhood memories of the TV show ReBoot. God how I used to love that show, I'd watch it every thursday at 4:30 on CITV (I'm English, just to clear that up now) and I used to have the PlayStation game too. I loved it, I love the characters, the situations, the references to computers and so on and so forth.

When I realised that ReBoot was being remade, I was astonished - there were other people out there that also liked and remembered ReBoot!

But anyway - I'm not much good at drawing and all that arty stuff, bur I've always had a passion and a flair for writing, so I've decided to start giving this a serious go, to see what I can make of it. I've done little bits of writing before (mainly poems and song lyrics) but I've written some prose that I'm intending to share in bits and pieces.

I stopped by to say I hope all of you trying to submit ideas for comics are doing well and although my taste is different in comic books, that each of you have some kind of success in the New Year especially Zeros 2 Heroes.

We need more small comic companies to fill the growing void of frustrated fans who feel abandoned. I read some of the responses to Marvel's wonderful decision to erase Peter Parker's marriage from existence. Marvel does Dallas! I'm referring to the TV show that made an entire season of the show a dream. But this isn't any dream. Now fans are looking at dozens of comic book that didn't happen. Great idea guys! Why not kill Captain America while your at it? Oops...

Recently I was asked to be a guest on a podcast called The Coffee and Tea Show.  So, heck yes, I went to the studio, put on the heavy headphones, and talked about ReBoot, the current revival, and the Zeros2Heroes site.  The show's page has links, of course.

Hopefully this will get the word out to a wider audience, both for ReBoot and Zeros 2 Heroes.

 check me out, writing a blog on this site, I'm awesome like that. So yeah, I've been waiting for the continuation on ReBoot for such a long time! I know,  I know, just as long as everyone else. Seriously though, over 1/3 my life waiting for it, and almost 1/2 my life watching the series!

I was extremely happy with the two movies. By two movies I mean "Daemon Rising" and "My Two Bobs", I do not see them as 8 episodes. I was disgusted on leaving it on a cliffhanger, its a slap in the face for the fans, but I guess I can't really say anything since we are finally getting more!

My fav characters are Hexadecimal - for the fact that when I was right into this show I was in grade 5 and she scared the sh*t out of me! Dot 'cause she's just the best and Phong because, well honestly if you don't like Phong I'd have to question your judgement. My fav eps were within the time frame of Enzo defending the system....

When I heard reboot was going to get a revamp, I started generating ideas, I was going to have "the hunt" crush the Mainframers and make Megabyte into some tyrannical ruler who was going to strip mine Mainframe to build a super weapon to conquer neighboring systems.  There was going to be massive fire pit "rendering engines" that would burn day and night giving a dark haze to everything in Mainframe. Megabyte was going to create hideous new zombie binome creations to hunt down any rebellion.  Enzo and Frisket would be held prisoner, forcing Dot to be some sort of administrator for megabyte managing enslaved binomes. I was going to have Bob return with new glitch powers, and Matrix and Andraia doing hit and run guerrilla attacks with a squad of hardened binomes, some of whom had special abilities like codebreaking or stealth.I w...

Yesterday as I went looking for reference for the comic project I started looking through my book collection. I have a nasty habit of buying books and then never reading them or reading them and forgetting I ever bought them.
And what do I find? Disney's Treasure Planet. The making of the movie. I have some great stills of John Silver's cyborg set up. It's not quite right for Matrix. I want his arm to look more like Al from Full Metal Alchemist, but its nice to have.
I also have the Art of Robots! I hated the plot of that movie. It needed so much work. But you can't have a better example of steampunk robots then in that movie. Great stuff for me to work with when designing Ether.

It's bucketing down here outside Vancouver today and I have had a few thoughts so I figure I'll jot them down and let them be torn apart by the rampaging crowd at Z2H - because that's what we're here for :)

Reboot - what's not to love about the fist full length CG cartoon to grace our TV's and our imaginations? I remember watching it back when I was working in Australia and enjoying it immensely.

I picked up the playstation game when it came out so I could explore and play in Mainframe too. Not a bad game, would love to see a rebuild for the Ps2 or even Ps3 though.

My first windows 98 desktop theme was Reboot. I used one of those screenshot grabbers that attached to the parallel port and nabbed shots of 'Firewall' for the background, sound bytes for the windows events, and generally had a grand time being somewhat creative.

Experimenting with 3D animation brought me further into Reboot, when using 3D Max and Bryce 3D I created...

In our pitch, all of our main characters (besides Hex) will hold true to their original personalities.  One of the things I was hoping to change was some of their outfits.

In general, I was looking to streamline a few costumes.  Phong, Frisket and the non-"human" looking characters will look exactly the same, but I wanted to give Bob, Enzo and Dot more cloth like attire.

I'm trying to turn my Devinant art account into not just a place to do ReBoot comic related stuff but take several other stalled projects and display them. Since I'm illustrating a story already I figured, why not illustrate something else I've written or started and haven't finished. Not much to update right now, as we're still completing our whole idea for events after our first few pages. I've always thought it was a little dangerous to show pieces of the concept we're doing, as people can immediately jump to different conclusions about what we are trying to do. I want enough material to communicate the mood and tone we would want our series to take in it's entirety, rather then leave people guessing.  Anyhow, for now, here's Phong!

Well, here goes nothing. I'll share a few drawings with you all. I've only recently took up making Reboot fanart back in May so I don't have a whole variety of works yet.

I'll only share two this time around, they being my personal favorites (maybe because I spent longer on them then I did the rest haha) ;) You can view them all on my deviantART page.

 

AndrAIa just has a fun character design you can easily re-design and manipulate into any bizarre ocean/fish theme you choose (The best references being anything pirranha, piscine, puffer, shark and man o war) Even though her original design was interesting I somehow find it's a bit...annoyingly cute. I didn't think that as a kid but now as an adult I look back and it's like...agh! I have the perfect solution: Make the fins ...

I shouldn't dis something so important but when you are one one staring at the summons knowing your number is up next, you get annoyed.

 

Here's a pic of the old Bob design, it came off a little more cartoon-ey then I originally intended it.  I always thought Bob's hair looked pretty good in CGI (computers have largely perfected chrome since those old "Minds Eye" shorts) but I haven't seen a lot of 2-D pics that fully do it justice, mine included.

 This is the blog of an alternative pitch for reviving Reboot, It's made by four employees of Rainmaker completely on their own time and motivation. Most of us have actually worked on the original Reboot property as employees of Mainframe Entertainment at the time. Now for some back-story.

I'm back and with a pic and some info! 

I'm an employee of Rainmaker (the company which holds the rights to, and initiated this retooling of Reboot) who animated on the original Reboot series back when Mainframe Entertainment made it. I enjoyedworking  on the franchise then, and as such have a vested interest in seeing that a version of Reboot I would want to work on again is made into a viable property once more.  I've gotten together with some other like-minded people at Rainmaker, who also worked on Reboot back in the day (most of them even more than me). On our own time, we've come up with ideas concerning Reboot that we've now been allowed to share with you fans.  I'll be referring anyone who's interested to another blog here at Z2H, sometime in the next few days, as we will be posting ...

Okay. I keep panicking.
I slept maybe 5 hours last night and I couldn't draw a thing. I totally freaked out. I felt like I can't do this.
But if I can't do this, how did I get that diploma from F.I.T. Did I cheat?
Maybe I feel like I took the easy road. Graphic arts doesn't take as much. No buildings or fancy vehicles. Cute, cuddly, fluffy things are what I do.Mickey, Pooh and Dora are my friends. I seems far too easy compared to this.
Then I remembered a man named Moses. How many excuses did he make to God? He did everything to could think of to get out of it. And what he did was a lot more important.
I got a gift. Am I going to bury my talent in the ground?
This isn't a dream. This is reality. I have at least do my best even if I've never tried to draw Mainframe before.

I've reached a point in the ReBoot comic outline where I must deal with Welman Matrix:

 

 

This is the best picture I could find. Remember him? He's Dot's father who became a Null who got installed in a robot who got zombified by Megabyte at the end of 408.

Prof WhizzyWig here. There have been a couple cool updates that ya'll should be made aware of regarding the ReBoot comic book. Check it.

First off, I'm definitely in the market for a new title for the ReBoot comic book. Several have been suggested but I'm not totally sold yet. That said, the first book will definitely (for now) be named Paradigms Lost. That was Slackbot's suggestion and I really liked it. I'm terrible at naming stuff so suggest away!

Smartens (our designer) and I met with Julian Lawrence (the editor hired by Z2H) last friday and we discussed the role of the artists and who will be doing what. We decided that a test page was necessary to determine each artist' s primary skills. Afterwards, we'll nail down what each artist will be doing. That meant I needed to churn out a page...

Hmm hmm~ I'm just gonna post enough words here so my pics don't show up on the main blog page cuz that's kind of embarrassing xD;~ so they're inside... blah blah blah... is this enough text yet?

Yay, OK! My sis had a birthday party tonight so I had a choice between sitting in deafening loud music with a bunch of kids I don't know or taking refuge in the computer room with my dad. No brainer there :D.

 Something I don't get about fanart though... how do you distinguish a fanart as for being for a pitch or not :/?  I was looking at some but a lot of the character designs are different... which ones are the real ones?  Also... is it even ok to draw a fanart for  a pitch anymore since the voting is over XD;...?  *Stupid*.

I've spent the last four days doing absolutely nothing but writing the ReBoot comic book (oh, and drinking coffee, tea, chocolate milk and eating melons, toast, scrambled eggs, and crackers) and phew - I need a break. Time for an update!

WARNING!!! INCOMING SPOILERS!!!

On days 1-3, I wrote a huge pile of notes. My notebook is now hugely full of... uh... notes. I spent a lot of time detailing arcs for the characters I thought needed complex arcs: Gnosis, Bob, Enzo, Matrix, Lens, Vector, and Ether. Here's a selection of primary arc-need describers I wrote.

 

Gnosis wants to become as powerful as a User so that it can become a Sprite.

Enzo wants to prove to himself and to his keytool that he has the heart of a Guardian.Lens want...

Well technically I've been there for two day's. I've finally uploaded some of my work.

I was the only one on the art team that didn't have a website for art(exept my blog here) so I just followed every one else there.

Hey everyone. This is Professor Whizzywig. Time for a REAL ReBoot update.

On Friday, ChiefZero called in On-FireWire, smartens, and myself (the writer) for the inaugural ReBoot comic production meeting. There, many of my questions were answered. Here's what I learned:

The initial comic will be a web-comic, presented here on Z2H. They really want to do a full printed version but they're waiting to see what kind of readership the comic gets. If enough people read it, they'll print it and distribute it.

The first 22 pages will be a "volume one", and further volumes will follow so long as readership levels are maintained. They've left it up to me to determine how many volumes the GNOSIS story will require.

The comic will be updated in piece...

Looking at Arrival's story it seems there will be no conflict between Dot and Bob. Good. What did worry me was the fact that there might be conflict between Bob and Matrix. This has been done in Season 4, and even though I have seen one episode (Nullbot of the Bride), I have read enough episode guides to know that the Mainframers were completely out of character.

One conflict that wasnot explored in season 4 was between Enzo and Matrix. It was explored to the extent of Enzo realizing in his own abilities but it never showed how the two acted in each others company.  Yeah I know we saw them react when Matrix was infected but we don't know he acts or thinks about Enzo.

In Number 7,  when faced to face with his younger self Matrix looks terrified and takes a step back and says "No...not you." He even feels like he has to defend his actions and who he has become, when before he doesn't feel the need to.

Then the restart happen...

Can anyone believe it? They really are planning to Reboot!

Background:

I've been a Reboot fan for quite a long time. I've seen a lot of MCE's early work (Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Reboot etc), and it's great to see them still interested in, what could possibly be their most popular series.

 

Ideas:

Read through a few things (and I may have mis-understood some),but

1. A Reboot web-comic

2. 3 Reboot films

Personall I think both are a great idea. Since they are planning on the web-comic first, this will allow people to get a glimpse at what Reboot is/was/could be. As for the films, if one correctly, could be a huge success.

Reading through the blogs/forums they are both divided into two main groups: those that want it to continue at season 4's cliffhanger, and those that want to skip around a bit.

Personally, I think skipping around a bit would be the better choice. Considering the films are&quot...

I really got off track. I decided to post up a fic that won me a URA award called Haunted Honeymoon.

My artbook didn't come today *tears*. Does anyone who has it know if there's any art of Dot's Diner in it~? It would be soo helpful for my comic.

Eek, his eyes are frikkin huge! Doesn't look like him at all but oh well. Anyways, Enzo's yoyo doesn't get enough action in the series... and that's too bad :( cuz I like his yoyo.
