Definitely check out Atlantis: The Lost Empire. That movie IS steampunk, except for the magical flying fish-cycles. And I think that Treasure Planet has some elements of it as well. They'd be perfect sources of inspiration!
Steamboy beats them both for sheer steaminess, though. That was a fun movie to watch. ^_^

Try Metropolis or Howl's Moving Castle (Miyazaki again). And... I want to say Fullmetal Alchemist, because it feels like it falls in the category, but I'm just not sure about it.

Slack told me to watch Fullmetal Alchemist. I'll have to find a manga of it today.
You know I have Treasure Planet and I totally forgot about it! I'll watch it again.

And then there are the "Girl Genius" comics, available on dead trees in a comic shop near you!

I bought 2 books on the history of weapons and knights for the guns and armor. I'm back to buying reference books. I know I could find the stuff on the internet but the photos were just too nice. And the weapons book has a bunch of soldiers wearing military coats. :)

*chuckles* You sure are getting serious about this! Makes me feel lame for writing such vague descriptions. :)

If you haven't already, you might check out:
-http://www.steampunkmagazine.com/ (free downloadable mag on the topic, three issues available)
-THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE, by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling (steampunk novel by cyberpunk genre pioneers)
-I haven't read FIVE FISTS OF SCIENCE, but it seems to be in that vein.
-It's not really educational, but Red-5's ATOMIC ROBO comic (starring a robot created by Nikola Tesla in the early 20th century) arguably has steampunk elements.
-Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN volumes both have steampunkish elements in them.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
