Capes: What do you think of them?

1 Like This

I had a bit of back and forth with Professor WizzyWig regarding the use of capes.

I've sort of taken Edna Mode from The Incredibles a bit too seriously. I personally am not thrilled about capes on superheroes anymore.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate capes. What's Superman or Batman without capes? Those characters needed them for affect. A flying character looks good in a cape. So do villians. Darth Vadar needs a cape. So does Doctor Doom. It adds menace.

But if you redid Superman, would you want a cape? Legion of Superheroes took the clone Superman concept and turned him into a new design that shows capes can be removed. I actually like the clone more then the original.

Depends on the character and on the cape. On the realistic end, capes are really bad in a fight because they get in the way if they are too long and too heavy. They're fine shorter and made of something that isn't going to help a damn in a fight, easily ripped and easier removed.

Or, you know, if the cape's all an illusion or being used as a weapon then go for it. Capes as weapons are awesome.

I definitely agree it depends on the character and the story, but in general I prefer characters without. Great for Halloween costumes, though!

I think long coats are severely underrated. But that's just me.

Have you read "The Watchmen"? Dollar Bill was done in when his cape caught in a door or some such.

Capes look nice, but I don't see the coolness factor when I look at them. I think "showy and impractical." Leave 'em out!

The only character I have given a cape to is Aries, and that was mostly to help note that she is the group leader. It wasn't a very long cape either, just partly down her back. Originally, I thought it added alittle flare, but now I'm thinking it's not wholly nessecary.

Consider me old-school, I guess: I've spent the past two days working on character designs for my second pitch, and all but two of the superhero characters are sporting capes. I've tried to give them practical reaons for having them--a solar-powered hero has covered the surface area of his with flexible solar panels, to store energy and power him at night; another has had his enchanted as a 'cape of holding', so it's where he keeps all his stuff.

At the end of the day, though, I just like the iconic, dramatic look of them, and practicality be damned.

I really don't think Reboot characters need them, well except for maybe Turbo, it might be good for him seeing as he's the "Prime Guardian" but the others, I'd say no, don't need them.

Capes are cool. They can be for maniacal characters, eccentric, classy or really evil. I think they'd look alright in ReBoot. If anyone knows what i'm talkin' bout, someone's done their own version of the reboot characters and MB has a cape. Looks really good too

As far as superheros go invulnerability gives a free pass for the dangers of capes. For everyone else capes should be a ceremonial option. Short versions can be good for mitigating the bad aspects and still signifying rank/class the ARC troopers/Mandalorians in Star Wars had half-skirts/hip capes or "Kama" for extra damping/shrapnel protection and for jetpack backwash. Which brings up the use of capes, long coats, and robes as protection if enhanced to stop magic/energy/small projectiles.

Capes are getting to be only for masked superheroes/ superheriones and nothing else. I mean a lot of the great shows don't usually use them. A few examples: Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon, and Transformers, or at least the live action Transformers. Those turned out really great, without capes, and Reboot doesn't really need them, but Turbo would look good with one, along with the main bad guy, Megabyte.
