I have to disagree with one of Smartens' comments: I liked the fact that Optimus Prime died-he was such a stupid leader military-wise and I preferred Rodimus Prime; he was SO much COOLER!!!

    Yikes, I now appear obsessive^^

Yes I do know this doesn't belong here:P

Wow, quality posts from Smartens and others after him. I'm stunned, just because I've seen some discussions on these blogs that devolved into something less noble. Just wanted to add that I agree with all of what's been said in Smartens megapost and the ones that came after it. I'm glad to see a voice of reason emerge.

Internal consistency is the key to believability in any property that requires the suspension of disbelief and I think many long-time fans want to see that internal consistency hold up well in whatever form Reboot 2 comes. I, for one, am ready for something different, it just has to feel like it would actually fit into the pre-established continuity to be believable.

Thank you for taking the time to write that, Smartens. You could have just let them bury themselves in this post, but you chose to point out what should be obvious to us (apparently not so obvious to some).

This contest shouldn't turn into a propaganda bitch-fest. What will we remember later when the best team has won, no matter who that is? Will we attach these petty arguments to the enjoyment of the viewing? Will we recall to friends "You should have read the catfights between fans during revision tests"?

Just think about that. Is that what we really want to remember from this?

You guys have it exactly right. You need to listen to us, the fans, because we're the ones who will make or break this thing - but only to a certain point.

I, and I think everyone else, are MORE than ready to new and exciting things to happen to ReBoot. However, we don't want new things at the sake of the pieces of ReBoot that made everyone love the show.

I can see the logical progression from one system to many systems to the net to the web and then to the world of the User. It seems like the next big step. However, this change would be at the expense of several things that make us love ReBoot. The first is the _relative_ believability. Yes, there are people and they live inside the computer and that is completely impossible. However, the relative believability comes from internal consistency, and the fact that to the actual Users, they are just using their Computers. But to the Mainframers, the User is this almost mythical powerful God-like entity. But the User is an unaware deity. So to have a User communicate with the people inside his computer breaks everything to do with consistency and believability. That is why we were so up in arms about it.

But now that it is gone, I'm not as worried as I was when I first read the pitches. Can't wait for Version 2!

    Smartens, you rock.

And you've got it down. This is not that different from any revision process for a film. The real change is that, at this point, the built-in audience gets to give the feedback, instead of the execs. It generates a buzz, and listening to the people who follow that buzz here makes it more likely you'll please the folks who would buy tickets for every film in the trilogy...

Obviously, on some points, the team needs to stick to their guns. There's some things not open to compromise. But on the others... why not please the fans? Why not get a positive buzz before production even starts, instead of whiny blogs about how X characters should have been more Y, or how Z "major" character only got a bit part and the "re-imagineers" corrupted the license?

It's a unique opportunity, and I'm glad to see your team in particular taking advantage of what it offers.

And it'll save you from making a Jar Jar Binks action figure that'll just feed bonfires... ;)

    PART 3
That's why so many bad movies are made, and why so many fans are left thinking, WTF, I could have told Lucas Jar Jar Binks sucked, Why didn't anyone ask me? I'd suggest that the method used here is far better because we're getting all of that out of the way at the very outset. There's a time and a place for pieces that have no fan interjection, but ReBoot belongs as much to the fans as to anyone and if they aren't happy no one is.

This of course also applies to the art where we're going through the exact same process. I've had discussions with people about everything up to and including whether or not Dot's lack of nostrils was canon. Now that's not the majority of the people but I have noticed that there was a loud and nearly unanimous outcry for Dot to have short hair and glasses. So what do I do? Do I tell everyone that they wrong because it doesn't fit my vision? Of course not, I listen to the majority opinion and go with my gut on the rest.

    PART 2
Imagine the horrors that could have been fixed or prevented altogether, Jar Jar Binks, New Coke, Batman and Robin, Catwoman, Clear Pepsi, The death of Optimus Prime etc etc. All of this happen because no one was listening to the fans regarding pre-existing properties that they already knew and loved. Fans have a right to be cynical, because usually the creators live in a Hollywood bubble where everyone tells them everything they do is incredible.

I think it's important to realize just how many rewrites and changes occur in the formation of every property and every show or movie that is produced. Often a script will go through a half dozen rewrites or more and even after the entire movie is filmed very often directors and such will go back and change who scenes, add dialogue and even remove entire characters. Moreover they very often make these changes based on test screening and focus groups comprised of their potential audiences.

I would like to see the creative team defend the idea, at least so far as to describe in greater detail what their idea was. A blanket statement that Gnosis kidnapped the User doesn't really put it into context for us. In context, it might be brilliant and our loss if it's not included.
