It's a fantasy, with a scientific setting. It's not a question of the probable or improbable - taken as a premise that it's set inside a computer, it makes no scientific sense.

If anything, I'm inclined to put it in the Space Opera sort of genre. Science Fantasy, perhaps.

Hey I can play at this. I'd have to say both and that puts me in the Other catagory. One of the things I always liked about ReBoot is it's complete uniqueness. One can make Tron comparisons but even that is a bit difficult. Also the various shows had very different feels to them. The stuff in Dots Dinner often played like a sitcom while the games played like an adventure. Later on in series when it was all Matrix and AdrAla it felt like a Sci-Fi epic.

There's one good thing about not using the polls, you can state your reasons why you're picking one or the other.

My first instinct was that it was Fantasy, because the whole idea was really obscure and not real. But then again, Sci-Fi is the same thing really; it can't happen, at least in the present time and day it can't. I'm kind of leaning toward Sci-Fi, because the whole concept, in its raw state, is about "people living in computers", much like Tron was. And it may not have any space-ship battles like in Star Trek. Oh, wait, they had the Web Wars. Well, it may not have any magic or mystical forces. No, wait, Wizards, Warriors, and a Word from our Sponsor had some of that.

I think... gah, I don't know! It's one of those things that has multiple genres! I'd say other, for the sheer fact that it's a beautiful blend between the two. It definitely has a Sci-Fi Feel to it, but on the other hand some of the concepts and ideas in the show lead itself to more of a fantasy feel. I personally think there's MORE of a Sci-Fi atmosphere to the show, but the fact that there's also a lot of fantasy in it, leads me to pick other (and by other, I mean both).

I'd say sci-fi. Sci-Fi can be set anywhere and not necessarily believable or logical (although if a story is not at all believable or logical then it can be labelled as bad sci-fi). It can be set in space, on Earth, present, future or even the past. Sci-Fi sometimes even borders on fantasy, especially in the Confluence novels, where it deals with the subject of omnipotency.

And hey, Terminator is a Sci-Fi, right? The Terminator itself is speculative technology and the scientific theory of time travel is exercised. Transformers is even labelled sci-fi (at least I do).

Well I still think it exists as more of a caricature of sci-fi rather than being true sci-fi. It is definitely closer to sci-fi than fantasy in my opinion, but I still think it's in a different category.

Sci-Fi. People have lost track of what sci-fi is, and it's not all technology. True sci-fi is still the story, the characters, the depth. Check out Orson Scott Card's review of Serenity for a clear idea of what sci-fi really is. After you read that, I think it becomes clear that ReBoot, especially after season 3 fully defined it, is true sci-fi, and that's a good thing.

The setting is based on technology, but everything else is fantastic, so my vote is for the other SF: Speculative Fiction (what would it be like, living in a computer?).

    I vote for a hybrid fantasy/scifi option!

    No? Aww.

I'll say fantasy. It's not *high* fantasy in LotR/D&D style, but fantasy about what doesn't exist in our world and would be difficult or impossible to reproduce even if technology advanced further.

I'd call it science fantasy. Science fiction is based on technology and has scientific explanations you can believe in for the framework of the story. For example, Larry Niven's "Ringworld" novels, or just about anything else Niven has written with he exception of his Warlock books.

Science fantasy tends to be futuristic, but without real science. It has zap guns, all-powerful superbeings, FTL travel without explanation, et cetera. "Star Trek" and "Flash Gordon" are examples of this.

ReBoot has a bit of science in the form of technology, but you can't honestly say it has believable science; it's more technobabble to explain what the creators wanted anyway. Heck, it's not even consistently applied. So, I'd say it's science fantasy, with the emphasis on the second word rather than the first.

I would have said it was a fantasy sci-fi. It's sci-fi, because it's based off real technology that already exists, and follows guidelines set out by how computers work in the real world. We've already proven this a number of times on here, with discussions about difference between the web and net, and many references being made to the real world technology.
That being said, there are also fantasy elements, in that everything about the computer is personified, and people actually inside your computer could never be real.
However, with all the techy talk in Reboot and constant references to computers, I think I'm leaning more to sci-fi than fantasy.
