I think Rainmaker has had plenty of feedback, although that survey that they had last year seemed to have just died away. The question is, are they taking any of it into account?
I think the most important thing is to get the original creators on the writing team. It's good to have some new blood, but also get the original guys, Blair and Pearson, to help capture a piece of Reboot's original charm and wit as well.
To my knowledge, Mr. Blair and Mr. Pearson have not been invited to be a part of the revival movie project. If that continues to be the case, I would call that a MAJOR disadvantage. I really want to see this succeed.
The original writers had an art. The stories had a distinct flavor to them. It was rich with allusions and humor, wit and puns. The characters had heart and intelligence.
What is vital, is to get back to the roots of the show. It's heart. It wasn't all technical and it didn't flow like a comic book. It was unique and special. It grabbed the hearts of the audience and gave children an insight into the wondrous inner workings of a computer. The characters developed such a depth as the seasons progressed. Bob was a hero, a roll model. Everyone, regardless of the degree, could relate to him in some way.
These are well developed characters in a well developed world. They are much loved and cherished. Many fans associate them with their childhood and aren't very open to the idea of them being muddled with. Please breathe life into them without destroying their legacy.
ReBoot, I think, originally worked mainly because it was split into episodes. I think Daemon Rising / My Two Bobs worked well as episodes, but taken as an entire movie didn't quite work so well.
If they want to stay true to the original formula, Rainmaker are really going to have to think well about pacing. The games can stay, but I wouldn't like to have LOADS of them. Two or three in a movie. They've also got to be great parodies.
I think the main thing they can get wrong will be the characters. The original characters were so very memorable, and the way they moved. A lot of CG nowadays (though I haven't seen much - this is mainly Pixar stuff) seems to be that motions are very comical and exagerated. Not the case with ReBoot. And the short Guardian test footage has me thinking they're going to go down the comical, exagerated route (especially as he seems quite goofy-looking).
We also need a suitable villain in Megabyte (as well as voice). And very few extra characters.
This show was great for the same reason Pixar movies are great. It's not so much the animation (though it was and still is fantastic), but the fact that it didn't talk down to its audience. Even though it clearly had children in its audience, it didn't cater specifically to what adults think children are. It had serious and complex stories, while at the same time having jokes that may fly over the heads of "children." That mix of humour and seriousness, is what makes is appealing to all age groups, and children appreciate the real humour that they don't get from watered down kids shows.
I haven't been on this site for very long, in fact I'm new here. But, I am a long time fan of ReBoot, I loved the show when I was a kid, and am thankful my parents took the time to record the shows during that time so my kids can enjoy it today. Until recently when my friend told me about this site, I had assumed ReBoot became one of those classic shows that faded into the past and was forgotten, I'm glad that's not the case. As for elements of this movie I hear about, the main things that could mess the movie up is getting voice actors who can't capture the original personality of the characters, shotty animation (no offence out there but Pixar has gotten a bit lazy with sticking to realism), and poor story lines. As for games in the movie, probably one or two is best, as adding too many would use up run time in a film. And really, the games simply remind us that they were in a computer, but the series didn't revolve around the games.
Yeah, games need to appear, but not be the focus. The two "movies" of season 4 handled the style a movie should use very well (especially Daemon Rising). It was a self contained story that tied up loose plot from the previous season. As for the animation, I really don't think they should change the style at all. Comparing Seasons 3 and 4 to the first season, you can see a huge difference, but the style is still the same. That's all that needs to be done with the new stuff. Those last two seasons still hold up extremely well about a decade later, and just making the slight upgrades that would be done with current technology would make it look amazing.
On the Rainmaker website it says that any ideas for current movies or plans or any other ideas have to be submitted by an agent and all other submissions will be rejected. I emailed them anyways sometime ago stating they need to realize that they've had us dangling from their unmentionables for information since back when it was Mainframe and all they've given us is a 35 sec video that could have been made in two days by three guys. So I told them they should update the fans more. asked them to release ANYTHING. A poster, teaser trailer, whether it would be live action Tron status or CG still. They haven't replied and I'm guessing deleted my message. I'm starting to think they may have just scrapped the ReBoot project. All I can say is they don't seem to be a growing company and they don't seem to be too interested in keeping the fans entertained.in the reboot. I'm this {} far from just tossing the dream aside. I hope rainmaker is reading these posts...... = (
first of all, i believe the movie was scheduled to come out this year; the year is now half over and we've yet to see anything about the movie except an 18 second video of a game cube dropping cgi sky scrapers (okay...) and that 35 second video (which i can't seem to find again) ...so it's probably too late to give them any feedback now
secondly, if the CGI is going to be anything like Avatar's i'm going to pass on this movie - . - yeah we've made great strides in CGI but that's no reason to scrap the old style....that was one of the biggest parts of the reboot charm...
thirdly, if they were going to accept feedback now I'd tell them to staff the original writers and stuff too and i would ask them to please resolve season 4's cliff hanger...
i hope they keep this show light-hearted and don't try to drag any of the world's ideologies and drama into it...this used to be a world into which i could escape from life momentarily...let's keep it that way!!!
p.s. i think us as fans (since the creators give us a lot of freedom of reboot anyway) should use our own talents to make the reboot movie we want and just forget about rainmaker :D
I totally agree with you - Avatar was an awesome movie, but those kind of graphics just won't do with ReBoot. Like you said very clearly, our favorite series should keep its charm from all these years ago/
I don't mind the new CGI. As much as I would love a continuation of the original, I wouldn't mind it being a reboot of ReBoot, new characters & plot.
Yet I make this clear to Rainmaker, they end it on a cliff-hanger or worse, they drop the project, they will beg for their company to be disbanded.
They will never be able to work on another project with the fans' trust devastated, and they will never be able to say "dumping it was a wise investment". Any show they make after that, is tainted with the wrath of the fans.
