Arrival: Mistakes We Didn't Make :)

Back a few posts, I - Professor WizzyWig, writer of Arrival - posted a list of our critical screwups. I figured we should follow up with a list of what people think we did right. You know, just in case we're wrong about them too. :) Please provide your opinions on these.

  • Character Design: Generally, you guys like our character design over the other groups. We've had many suggestions for improvement, so we're on our way to a killer V2.
  • Characterization: We have kept the characterization identical to the original series. An anti-hero Bob never really came into my mind. You guys seem to think we're using the characters as we should - the way they were made.
  • The Script: I have only heard one or two complaints about the script, but overall everyone likes it. That makes me happy, since I'm the writer. All this pitch stuff is for not if the writer can't make the magic happen on the page.
  • General Antagonism: An intelligent system (perhaps a system with a powerful program installed) such as Gnosis seems to have been accepted by the audience. We just need to figure out his background so he's not an alien. And maybe go a little less Tron, though some people don't mind that either.
  • Timeline: Our story can easily involve the Hunt or at last come very quickly after the Hunt has concluded. There's no "days and days later" or anything.
  • Codemasters: Universally, people love that we brought back the Codemasters. I see their involvement expanding in V2.
  • Avatars: People like the idea of the Avatars - mass-manufactrued, low-complexity sprites that do the dirty work of a master villain somewhere else.
  • Mainframe: We kept Mainframe as the main base of operations. It's the characters' home, so I think it's too important to toss out. No one seems to mind too terribly that the Principal Office has been replaced with a machination of the enemy.
  • Expansion of User Lore: People seem to want User-lore to be explored more. I think I have an idea of how to combine this with the involvement of the Codemasters...

That's it. I miss anything?

As a reminder, here's the list of mistakes too, in case you forget what they are. :P

  • Aliens in ReBoot: This was a bad idea, end of story. We have already agreed that this must go. Gnosis will no longer be an alien machine, but rather something more organic to the original ReBoot. We are considering many options.
  • Proposing User/Sprite Interaction: I had a bad feeling about this when we started, but went ahead with it anyway. As I said elsewhere, expanding User lore is a very good idea - but allowing the User and the Sprites to, possibly, MSN each other saps the User of his/her/its mystique. We are retooling...
  • Too Out-There Character Design: Now I know most people like our designs the most, but we feel we still went a little too far. We are already considering a design rollback to make the characters more recognizable. For instance, check these Dot sketches smartens (the artist) did earlier yesterday:

    Also an addition to Mistakes we Didn't Make, and the most important: We actually communicate with and take the fan's input very seriously. The fact that you consistently talked with us as well as acknowledge your changes makes you guys all the best out of the five pitches so far. Though I do regret not saying my input earlier, I do look forward to reading as well as critiquing your v.2 of your idea for ReBoot.

    Well-said. It sounds like you have a really good grip on, well, what's going on. (Just s'long as you don't totally abandon The Hunt...)

    You're doing a good job on this, really looking forward to your next verision.
    I have one question; I haven't read about game cubes being mentioned, maybe I've just missed it, I assume that Gnosis has not grown out of game playing?

    great to see you are recognizing your faults and want to fix things up. I for one know, I've complained and whined my way to almost start bashing you as the worst ReBoot story pitched so far.

    I won't pass judgment again until I read your new proposal but as it stands right now. Reboot 2.0 has the best story. A new upgrade OS keeps the lore of all that is ReBoot. But gives a new setting and something fresh.

    But I'm rooting for you guys since you actually interact with the community, not like ReBoot 2.0 team. They don't heart us =(

    I would really like it if you go more in-depth with the characterization and development. I do love that you are keeping the cast of the original, but I always loved Reboot not just for what it was, but for what it could be. You guys are great because of your interaction with the fans, and taking our comments into consideration. Great job guys, i'm probably going to vote for you guys.

    This is absolutely fantastic the way you're developing this so quickly. The changes are all doing very well.

    I myself think the Avatars could be perhaps less bulky? As reworks of sprites, maybe they could have a bit more of a creepy look rather than mechanical and brutish? The faces would be perfect for that though, very good idea to keep them without identity.

    The artwork for them was gorgeous, but maybe design something that looks like it's a mindless slave that is both weak-looking yet very dangerous? It's an odd description. Maybe I can come up with some sketches.

    I'm liking this pitch the most right now.

    I still disagree with Gnosis, It doesn't work within the lore of the world. Systems are the world. they don't have conscience thought. If Gnosis was in a way- Well I can't really think of a better explination at the moment, like the Beast Planet from Shadow Raiders in that the Planet can consume and enslave other planets, but it's actually a group of bad guys running it.

    And the main problem I had with your script was the dialogue, otehrwise everything would be fine. It's just down to dynamic characterization for getting the dialogue that you have to work.

    I had an Idea for the origin of Gnosis. One of the comments in another post suggested that Gnosis be a rogue AI. Well I was thinking about how ReBoot has a history of doing parodies, so I was thinking that there could be a point in which a gamecube comes down and the game is a Tron parody. This would make the look and feel of Gnosis fit the story while still staying true to Reboot.
