From the ARRIVAL Notebook; Part 2

Here's some more obscure stuff that never managed to make it into the final V1 pitch. This is about a character that everyone is glad to see back. Nothing in here will likely change for V2.

CODEMASTERS LENS

Lens is a member of the Codemasters, a secretive band of mercenaries that, in the past, hired themselves out to the highestbidder for various unsavoury tasks. This was mainly a cover-up for their primary fascination - the study of code manipulation.

Everything in this techno-fantasy realm is controlled by code. Normally, the code is invisible, but occasionally a sprite shows an aptitude for understanding, reading, or even manipulating code. The Codemasters squirrel away these adepts and offer them membership in the Codemasters. Once they accept (they always do) the new Codemaster is trained to study, manipulate, and ultimately rewrite code - and thereafter uses code to alter reality. Codemaster Lens used his code rewriting skills to grow to mammoth proportions in 2.2 "High Code."

Normally, Codemasters keep their knowledge of the code secret and refrain from involvement in Net affairs. This is because the Guardian Council once punished the Codemasters for using overtly destructive measures in their battles against viruses, who are the Codemasters' traditional prey.

After encountering the heroes in 2.2, Codemaster Lens realized that the people of the Net can be surprisingly effective and noble warriors, and so his opinions diverged from Codemaster norms. When Gnosis attacks, Lens tries to convince the Codemaster Elders to use their powers to save the Net. They do not listen, and Lens elects to take matters into his own hands.

Though Lens has a soft spot for non-coders, he thinks they have a long way to go before they deserve his approval. He is hyper-critical, negative, and disparaging, preferring to nitpick rather than praise. He patronizes and condescends to the non-coder heroes, constantly reminding them that he holds himself as their intellectual superior. When there isn't work to be done, Lens debates code-related issues with Ether, studies the code, or simply meditates on the code in the privacy of his room. Despite his ire, Lens values honour and is loyal to Bob.

Lens knows many Codemaster secrets that will be revealed to Bob in due time.

Yeah, that still sounds pretty cool to me.

I really think this characterization is spot on. 100%. Don't change a thing.

I look forward as to how Lens will be incorporated into your story. However, would you also consider making Lens a character that is neither a protagonist nor antagonist, but a person that works only for himself? Judging from your character description, he seems like he could be another anti-hero. It'd be nice to "spice things up a bit" and not have everyone be considered to be good or bad.

sounds really good, Reminded me of the Matrix in the second paragraph.

And reminds me of HK47, which is always a good thing. Sounds like a great character to add to the ReBoot cast.

I definitely think you got the characterization for Lens pretty much dead on to what he was in his only appearance, and exactly what he should be. Good work.

I especially like the mention of his loyalty to Bob, because I really felt like those two could make a really effective team if they ever met up again, and were fighting for the same cause.

As everyone else has said, your characterization of Lens is really great; I really can't wait to see more of him and I think he's going to make a really great transition from a minor character with only one appearance in Season 2 to one of the main cast in Arrival.

I can see him thinking himself being superior to other sprites, as Codemasters, from the description, have surpassed normal boundaries and skills beyond "did you want fries with that?"

Still, it's hard to believe the other Codemasters would be so incredibly near-sighted, but then again,

[cont'd]...history always repeats itself with the whole mentality of "We're a superior force that'll fight off anything!" Anything but Gnosis.

I'd imagine they eventually see the error in not taking care of the problem before it became to great for them to handle.

Excellent job on the characterization! I still want to see him more fleshed out like in 2.0. Maybe all that armor he has on is just that? Keep the same insectoid, skinny overall look? In 2.0, after all, Bob couldn't tell that Lens wasn't from the 'Net. Perhaps he had a nasty brush with it, thus the obvious scarring and degradation that had Bob thinking he was from the Web? I'm still working on that concept sketch. Nice citations, by the way, good way to tie it all in.

I meant to say 2.2. XD There's a bad typo.
