ReBoot: What We've Learned So Far

1 Like This

WhizzyWig here. I'm leaving out the Arrival logo on this post because I'm speaking from the point of view of a longtime fan - not one of the pitch writers. I'd like to take a minute to review what this contest has taught us so far.

First of all, this contest was pitched to us as a kind of creative gladiatorial pit where we hapless pitch teams - scribes, artists, and producers - would battle one another until only one remained standing. Our weapons were to be the story, characters, and premise of a new ReBoot, and the Senators would be you guys, the fans, and you were to goad us when we fell down and toss us a new weapon every once in a while.

Clearly, the battle has not gone as we all expected it too. Without going into details, the battle has not been the kind of thing the Roman Senators would have approved of. Furthermore, the guards are forcing everyone to stay until the round is over. No wonder everyone's getting uppity (even me).

But let's not forget that something important has happened here - something I'd never imagined possible: that a collaborative effort between fans and creators can turn a passable idea into an awesome idea.

When Arrival launched, I think most people voted for us because we were the least of the five evils. A lot of people say it was because our art was the best, but do I need to remind everyone of Wonder Dot? We got our share of ribbing, story- and art-wise. It was sheer luck that we had the least offensive material. Things could have gone very differently otherwise.

But after some very deliberate review, a lot of late-night, almost real-time discussions with fans, we've been able to shake the evil that initially pissed everyone off. Now we're well on the way to making something that everyone can like.

Now forget about Arrival. Isn't that alone an amazing thing? Isn't it incredible that one of these stories will become reality as a result of fan-creator interaction? Just think of what Star Wars might have been if Lucas had invited this type of collaboration. We might never suffered through Jar-Jar Binks for six hours.

And that's exactly what we're all actually doing here - murdering Jar-Jar Binks before he even hits the script page. This whole thing has made me wonder if an audience shouldn't be invited to write an entire series in collaboration with the creators. Can you imagine how cool it would be if the fans themselves were able to contribute ReBoot story ideas and to have those ideas become episodes? That seems to be the next natural step here.

Don't write off this contest because the idea you like isn't winning. There will be many other opportunities later on for you to offer your opinions, regardless of who wins. I don't see Rainmaker throwing this away after building it up.

Just my two cents. Stay Frosty everyone.

Well said Jeff. This is truly some revolutionary ground here and I'm glad to be a part of it. The best thing to remember is that all of us are trying to make the best ReBoot possible.

This is all very exciting to even think that we all have a part in bringing back ReBoot the way we want it. Thank you for being the only team to truly interact with the fans and make sure your idea is as refined and perfect as it can be.

    I can't wait for Arrival V3. I know it won't disappoint.

I'm not writing it off because 2.0 isn't winning. I'm writing it off because none of the other pitch teams seem to give a shit. People like Rek and myself plain don't want to go to supporting another pitch, especially after all the thinking and work we've put into 2.0 support. So what can we do? Absolutely nothing, aside from sit by and watch as the big, shiny Arrival pitch gets more and more material - it doesn't make me want to join in, it makes me want to hurt someone. 2.0 fans are dedicated, and they deserve a shot too - and now because of the utter failure of the other teams, everything has been for nothing.

Seriously, even if the 2.0 team came back RIGHT THIS INSTANT, it'd still be too damn late to do anything - Arrival has too big a lead on us. There really is just no point of continuing discussion, other than just for the friggin' hell of it.

I really had high expectations of this contest. Now it's just turned into 'Sit back and pitch ideas to other fans, while the team does absolutely nothing.'

Imagine two fathers; one obviously better at parenting than the other. We're the children of the ignorant, abusive parent - however, we don't want to leave them, because we're family. It sucks monkey balls, but that's just the way it is sometimes.

    What a shitload of fuck.

Really, I mostly fear what would happen if Rainmaker concluded that inviting fan feedback was a dangerous, messy gamble, best avoided.

Man, SB, you've got a mouth on you. Still, I can sense your desperation. All I can say is: don't turn your back on them. Nobody likes a traitor. :P

Okay, I'm kidding. If I see the writer - and I do sometimes - I'll punch him in the mouth for you. I think I owe him a beer anyway.

Eh. I don't see 'foul' language as a big deal. They're all just words, after all.

But, I don't exactly see how it's being a traitor. I'm sitting here in the sand, twiddling my fucking thumbs, waiting for the 2.0 staff to come back and give us SOMETHING. I think I've been pretty damn patient, thus far, considering the pace YOUR pitch is moving.

Seriously. I'm waiting to see an article about it in TIME or something-- Fan-Power: Rebooting the Creative Process.
Okay maybe not TIME. BUT STILL
But seriously, I can't say enough what a great experience this has been for me. No matter the outcome, I will always be glad to have been a part of this.
    Yay for staying frosty XD

Same as Guardian and Jester— I am proud beyond measure to be part of this, no matter what comes out of it. You all have done a great job with interaction, and that really adds to creative flow and inspiration. I'm having so much fun with this— I can't wait for your next uploads!

Write off ReBoot fans? Well, wouldn't that be smart...

I feel your pain Shadowbolt, and you bring up some interesting points. But as odd as it sounds I think fan feedback has played a big role in the motivation of certian teams. If for example your work has been pummeled into oblivion by the critics, there is little motivation to try to refine your idea or start completely anew.

On the other hand if you've been getting good feedback and support it's all the more motivation to keep at it. Many creative people weather they're artists, writers or whatever know exactly what I'm talking about. I can't speak for a specific group(s) I'm simply speculating.

If your father has abandoned you there is plenty of room at our house. You can still visit on Birthdays and Christmas. My only request is that I get to be the father and WhizzyWig can be the mother. jk

Also I still love Wonder Dot. If you think you've seen the last of her you're sadly mistaken. Maybe not in ReBoot and maybe not anytime soon, but one day, and for the rest of your life. WonderDot will rise again!

So, wait - you're asking me to support Arrival? Dude, I'm sorry, but just, no. I just plain don't like Arrival - the story doesn't appeal to me - and as a wannabe writer, story is more important to me than artwork.

But hey, who knows? There's still half a month left - maybe while I'm sitting here, waiting for the 2.0 team's excuse for their utter radio silence, you'll manage to somehow 'WOW' me. Perhaps eventually, your story won't make me feel like I'm being spoon-fed strained peas. 'Open up! Here comes the plain!'

Also, the idea that 'good feedback = good results' isn't exactly true. It IS true that you can't give just one kind of feedback or the other, as it'd just fuck up the pitch, but that isn't the case here. The 2.0 team has received a shitload of feedback, both positive, negative, constructive and creative. Yet still, nothing. All that v2 of the pitch was, was rehashing every single thing we already had, from the text to the pictures. And you know what? No excuses, or explanations - the 2.0 team just says 'This is the way it is; live with it', and drops you on your ass.

So why do I stick with them? Because the story appeals to me. Aside from the joke that is v2, it makes sense, canonically, and technically. It fits in almost perfectly with the Reboot universe, and the story just fits in with the whole computer theme. That just plain isn't something that Arrival gives me; simple as that.

And so, here I sit, tossing different 2.0 ideas out of nowhere, hoping that someday soon, the team will do SOMETHING. Give us some new pictures, give us some more story, give us a believable excuse, give us SOMETHING , God damn it!
