ARRIVAL: Here We Go...

0 Like This

Yo. Professor WhizzyWig here, back from my week off. Really, it was pretty easy to take a vacation since ReBoot posts have almost completely stopped since last Sunday. Good - my eyes were traumatized from all the reading.

For the duration of the comic creation process, I will be doing regular blog posts. The other creators will likely as well, though I'm not sure how exactly. I think having everyone blog under Arrival_Producer doesn't make much sense. Here's the update for this week:

There's no update. Everyone was taking a week off, it seems. We have a meeting planned for this week where, I hope, everything will be explained in detail. After that, I'll do a full post with all the new info.

For the moment, know that I haven't started the new script. I'm holding off until Rainmaker and I (and the team in general) nail down the parameters of the project (e.g., length of comic; episodic updates versus one-shot upload; number of volumes; manner of presentation; page shape; etc.). No writing can truly begin until everything is agreed upon. Frankly, I have no idea how our winning pitch idea could possibly fit into a single 22 page script, so that will be discussed.

For all you writing geeks, I most certainly will be using Storyview to outline the comic and then Final Draft to write the script. I'm not usually into gimmicky writing software, but Storyview is simply too awesome and Final Draft is the standard screenwriting software.

Though I'll be using a standard screenwriting format (in a customized comic style I invented for a different project called Clan Yamori, which I need to show you guys) I will likely be writing the script as a "letter" to the artists, so I'll be speaking to them directly (like Gaiman does in his scripts). Leaving things "open to interpretation" sounds good, but it rarely works. I'm going to be very specific about what the artists need to be doing in each panel. That's my plan, at least.

And that's all I have to say for the moment.

Thanks for the note. The silence after the announcement of the winner was a little worrisome.

IMO it'd make the most sense to plan ahead for an Arrival miniseries - 66, 88, or however many multiples of 22 it takes to tell the story properly. That's what was mentioned in the second conference call: first the webcomic, then one print comic, then a miniseries, then the movies. Arrival is simply too complex for one issue, so I assumed that that first comic would be the first installment of the winning pitch.

I think we had all just been posting so much that we needed a few days to recharge. And besides honoring your vacation, there wasn't much new stuff to chew on. Put something new out there this week and we'll all bite. ^^

Good luck trying to condense 'specifics' in your script in terms of detail elements--lighting, color, expressions, gestures, and the like--so they don't make your script run over too long. I'm far too much of a descriptive prose writer, and when I took a scriptwriting class, my script was too bulky in terms of description! LOL!

I hear Final Draft is really good software for writing scripts (as in, it helps you shortcut those formatting technicalities that take forever in MSWord). Never heard of Storyview before, though. I suppose I should become a little more familiar with it if my future career goal is to become a Storyboard/Character design artist ^^

raptorix: This isn't Marvel - I'm sure they won't care how long the script is. I expect they're concerned more about how much they're going to pay us. :)

Slackbot: I'm sure things have changed since your initial conference call. I haven't yet had a full conversation with Paul and the gang yet. As soon as I know what's going on, you can bet I'll post it.

Prof - I don't doubt that things have changed, but that outline makes more sense to me - given the circumstances - than anything else I can think of. I look forward to the updates so I can pimp 'em!

This might not have anything to do with reboot, but if you reed the FAQ's in ccn they do say only 22 pages for the stories.

If printing the web comic is a possibility, the web comic will be 22 pages, standard comic page dimensions.

One-shot updates? I hope that fans won't have short attention spans as they read the story.

Nice to have you back, Whizzywig!
