WHO ARE THE NEW BAD GUYS? (GNOSIS and the AVATARS)

GNOSIS and the AVATARS

"...the colour itself becomes a character."

Last time I gave a bit of a brief on the Bob and Dot characters and we've been getting a pile of great feedback and suggestions, keep them coming. This time I'd like to talk a bit about the main threat, that being Gnosis and the Avatars. You'll notice that I've used red throughout these images and kept red to a minimum for all the other characters. That way the colour itself becomes a character and we can convey an immediate sense of danger just by casting a red light or having a character glare at out heros with menacing red eyes. You'll also notice that our heros have a predominantly cool colour scheme in contrast with our bad guys.

THE AVATARS

Since our Avatars are essentially assembly line products we've brought that characteristic out by stamping their numbers right on their faces. The numbers themselves are indicators of there function and make and make them somewhat frightening in-so-far as you can't tell if they're looking at you or not.

There look is highly suggestive of there purpose and it's not to difficult to tell what there role is based on their build. Think a colony of ants where there are warriors, breeders, slaves, etc. There are many different types of Avatars, and many are horribly damaged and deformed. Have ideas for cool Avatar shapes? send them in.

GNOSIS

And now for one that is a personal favorite of mine, GNOSIS. I'm some smaller versions of this image it's difficult to tell just what is going on. Yes it's a giant head but it has a twist, it's comprised of a collection of smaller yet still massive bodies that move in unison when combined but can still function as individual threats when separated from the whole. As big as it may be, a giant head frozen motionless in the sky poses little threat to a Guardian the caliber of Bob.

The giant cables that extend toward the interior of the mass constantly feed Gnosis' power and size. I'd imagine that if left unchecked Gnosis would complete his body and become an (even more) unstoppable menace.

As always we'd love to see some fan input and even fan art relating to any of our concepts. Am I talking nonsense? has all this been done in a 60's cartoon series that I've never heard of? do these just plan suck?, we want to hear it.

Couldn't have written that better myself, Shaun. :)

That said, you pics are screwed up. They have to be smaller to fit this blog.

We're putting larger ones up on this external forum:

Your idea of colour scheming is a good one, and also well tested in the original series. Green would always be associated with viruses for example, and in the case of Megabyte, a navy blue as well, especially for all his viral binomes. So the colour coding gets a thumbs up.
Your ideas are definately conjouring up visual ideas of my own, can we just upload any of our artwork onto the revelant section of the arrival page?
The Gnosis does look good, although I'm not sure it's completely new. You mention it's comprised of lots of smaller objects moving in unison? Sounds a bit like The Matrix Revolutions baby face thing in the machine city. I do like the idea however that the Gnosis plans on completing his body.
Also, all the circuit type stuff on the walls in that image is much liked.
Your plan doesn't suck, it needs a fair bit of refinement, but so far you're the closest to how I would have liked a new series of Reboot, keep it coming.

I like that idea about the color red, it's brilliant! Reboot always had very well identified villains.

I like the fact that you can't know if the avatars are looking at you or not and the number is a good idea, but I think that the designs still need some work for the head...

I don't understand the concept of massive bodies that constitute Gnosis. Can you elaborate?

I like the idea of Gnosis always growing.

Well, first things first - I love, love, LOVE your use of colors in all your pictures and designs! The colors all just seem so beautiful to me and I'm sure in CGI they'd be even more gorgeous! It would definitely be a treat for the eyes to see all those vivid colors animated - you have chosen such a wonderful color palette!

I also really love the entire concept of the avatars! I really don't know how I would change it, but I think everything about them is really great - from them actually being sprites, to being erratic and unpredictible at times, and to being able to be possessed by Gnosis and speak directly to our heroes. The designs are also really awesome, with the numbers as faces as well as each looking similar but still having slight differences so they're not all clones of one another. Really fantabulous job!

Gnosis also seems very innovative! I'd like to see more of it and how the whole collection of smaller, but massive bodies is going to look and play out. Is there going to be one main body within those massive bodies that's in control? Or are they all collectively Gnosis and share the same mind? Or is it similar to the Avatars where the bodies are just things for Gnosis to possess in order to communicate and fight his enemies while he (or it, should I say?) is really just a body-less entity? It would be pretty cool and frightening (but in a good way) for Bob and gang to come face to face with the giant head, thinking it's immobile and can't fight them, only for it to then suddenly break into those smaller bodies, like its own army, to do battle with our heroes (especially if Gnosis ends up outnumbering our heroes).

Anyway, I'm really curious to see how everything develops! :)

I like this concept the best, so far. Gnosis reminds me of a villain from the series Ender's game, which was an ant like species that had a Queen. Each of her ants were like an extension to herself while she acted as the brain. That's what Gnosis and the Avatars seem to me. The color scheme is a brilliant idea and I love the design of the avatars. I think Gnosis' main look could be redone, though. He reminds me too much of the mask from The Mask. understand that he is building himself a body, but maybe there's a better way of representing that. Overall, I am really liking this.

Wow great feedback guys thanks a lot. Trying to do something original is a tricky thing as so muc h has been done in the world.
I know the images aren't fully visible here but can you guys drag them off your screen and drop them on your desktop to view in another program? I'd like people to get the hi res version and if I scaled them down they'd be no bigger than the images in the other section.

Your enemies not only fit ReBoot flawlessly, but they're original and clever. I love the face-stamping to differentiate the Avatars, and Gnosis fits right in. I'm getting happier and happier by the minute.

Perhaps I missed the clarification, I apologize if my question has been answered elsewhere.

Do the avatars have any capacity for self-will, or are they direct extensions of Gnosis? Some of the description reminds me of the Borg hive mind.

Uggh, I hate this. I write a big big big post and then says "your comment is too short". So I'm going to need to break it down to multiple parts.
