It's a pet peeve of mine that many people seem to think that fan works are a waste of time because they don't make any money. My answer to that is: have you ever heard of HOBBIES? Hobbies are things people do simply for pleasure. Fan works are hobbies, and I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the sites I've made, the stories I've written, et cetera. Anyone who spends more than an hour a week sitting on their ass watching TV has absolutely no room to criticize how anyone else spends their own time.

Divineroseboot, do what you enjoy doing! Life is not about making money. If you make enough to live to your satisfaction, nobody has the right to look down on you for doing something creative that you believe in on your own time.

So, when does it start?

Well I should warn you Chief that I got to juggle this and a regular job. I've freelanced before while having a full time job and it can be done. It does lead to some grumbling when you have to give up most of your spare time to pull it off.
